KALFEIN MAIKEL WUISAN

Ventje Sumual Sang Pemberontak

An early documentary work focusing on Ventje Sumual and political history connected to Minahasa and Indonesia.

Documentary · Completed Film · 2011

Kalfein Wuisan’s first documentary, examining Ventje Sumual, Permesta, and the political meaning of the label “rebel” within the history of Minahasa and Indonesia.

About the Film

Questioning the Label “Rebel”

Ventje Sumual Sang Pemberontak is a documentary about Ventje Sumual, a Minahasan military and political figure closely associated with the Permesta movement.

The film does not use the word “rebel” simply to repeat an official state label. It uses the term as a question: rebel against whom, and against what kind of political condition?

Through Ventje Sumual’s life and the history surrounding Permesta, the documentary reflects on regional inequality, political authority, resistance, and the ways national history is written.

Logline

Through the life of Ventje Sumual, a young filmmaker from Minahasa examines how one political figure became known as a rebel and asks whether resistance to injustice can be understood through that label alone.

Synopsis

A Man inside a Contested History

Ventje Sumual occupies a complex place in the political history of Minahasa and Indonesia.

He was involved in the struggle for Indonesian independence and later became one of the central figures associated with Permesta, a political movement that emerged amid demands for regional justice, political reform, and a more balanced relationship between the central government and regions outside Java.

In dominant national narratives, figures connected to Permesta were frequently placed under the category of rebellion. The film returns to that language and examines what disappears when a complicated political history is reduced to a single word.

Rather than presenting Ventje Sumual only as a hero or an enemy of the state, the documentary places him within the tensions of his time: independence, military service, regional dissatisfaction, political resistance, conflict, and the struggle over historical memory.

Core Question

Rebel against whom, and against what?

The film asks whether the word “rebel” is sufficient to explain a political movement that emerged from experiences of inequality, centralisation, and demands for regional justice.

Permesta and Regional Demands

Looking beyond a Simplified National Narrative

Permesta is often remembered primarily through the armed conflict that later developed between the movement and the central government.

The documentary looks beyond that simplified frame. It approaches Permesta as part of a wider political history involving dissatisfaction with centralised government, unequal development, military and civilian interests, and demands from regions seeking greater participation in shaping the country.

This perspective does not remove the contradictions or violence of the period. It creates space to understand why the movement emerged and why its history continues to be debated.

History and Power

Who Has the Authority to Name the Past?

Political labels are never neutral. Words such as “hero,” “rebel,” “separatist,” and “patriot” are shaped by the institutions and groups that gain the authority to write history.

Ventje Sumual Sang Pemberontak reflects on this relationship between language and power. It asks how people in Minahasa remember figures whose political choices were judged through a national narrative largely produced from the centre.

The documentary therefore becomes not only a portrait of one person, but also an early attempt to look at Indonesian history from Minahasa.

A Minahasan Perspective

Making a Film from the Region

The film approaches national political history from a Minahasan perspective.

This does not mean replacing one absolute version of history with another. It means recognising that people in the regions have their own memories, experiences, questions, and interpretations of national events.

By beginning from Minahasa, the documentary opens a space for histories that are often reduced, marginalised, or absent from dominant accounts.

First Documentary

The Beginning of a Filmmaking Journey

Ventje Sumual Sang Pemberontak was Kalfein Wuisan’s first documentary film.

It was developed as part of his undergraduate final project in Information Technology with a concentration in multimedia.

The project connected technical learning in audiovisual production with an interest in Minahasan history, political memory, and the possibility of using documentary film to ask questions that formal historical narratives often leave unresolved.

Production Context

Learning Documentary through Practice

The film was produced with limited resources and became an early practical exploration of documentary research, cinematography, interviewing, historical narration, and editing.

A Pentax K-r camera was used during the production.

The technical limitations did not prevent the project from developing a clear political and historical position. The film became the starting point for a longer filmmaking practice concerned with Minahasa, community memory, Indigenous knowledge, and stories viewed from within.
