Kalfein Maikel Wuisan

Indigenous filmmaker, writer, and storyteller from Wuwuk.

Kalfein Maikel Wuisan is an Indigenous Minahasan filmmaker, writer, photographer, and storyteller from Wuwuk, South Minahasa, Indonesia. His work grows from life in the village and moves across film, books, photography, cultural memory, Indigenous knowledge, and collective practice.

He works from within the community rather than approaching it as an outside subject. Through documentary cinema, writing, photography, and collaborative spaces, he explores how stories are carried through land, language, labour, memory, and everyday life.

I am Kalfein Maikel Wuisan. I make films, write books, document knowledge, and build collective learning spaces from my home village of Wuwuk.

My work begins with what is closest to me: family, gardens, language, village history, elders’ memories, Indigenous communities, and relationships between people and their living territories.

Film and writing are not simply ways of producing works. They are tools for relearning, protecting memory, strengthening communities, and ensuring that people can tell their experiences from their own perspectives.

Working from the Village

Returning to and Settling in Wuwuk

After years of studying and working away from the village, I chose to return to Wuwuk. In 2023, I left my position as a university lecturer and began centring my life and creative practice in the village.

This decision was not an attempt to withdraw from the wider world. Working from Wuwuk became a way of engaging with the world without leaving behind the place that shaped my knowledge and perspective.

From the village, I develop films, books, archives, workshops, performances, and collective work. Wuwuk is not merely a residential address. It is a learning space, a source of stories, a place for building relationships, and the foundation of my practice.

“I work from within, not from outside.”

Proximity to people, language, land, labour, and daily life shapes how I conduct research and build stories.

WORKING FROM WUWUK

I work from Wuwuk because the village is not simply a location or backdrop. It is where relationships, language, labour, land, and memory shape how stories are made. Working from within allows me to remain accountable to the people and places that carry these stories.

Movements, festivals, collectives, and shared spaces developed through long-term work with others.
